Gahl-Mills will oversee an organization which has given grants of more than 33 million dollars to area arts concerns in its’ two year existence.

The grants are funded by the cigarette tax county voters authorized in 2007. Gahl-Mills says that track record of strong community support for arts and culture strongly influenced her decision to accept the offer to come to Cleveland.

In taking the helm, Gahl-Mills says one of the first orders of business is to increase public awareness of the organization, and how it operates.

KAREN GAHL-MILLS: “CAC is doing great work, and to a certain extent it is a bit invisible in the community, so one of the things that we can do is to raise the profile of CAC, and help folks understand how their tax money is going to work in their communities.”

Gahl-Mills selection from among 81 candidates is a bit of a homecoming, as she spent her teen years in Northeast Ohio, graduating from Westlake High School.

The Arts Council gave Gahl-Mills a four year contract. She’ll begin her new job in February.

Cleveland theatrical legend John Kenley passed away earlier this month at the age of 103.
Kenley started out his theatrical career as an acrobatic dancer—a hand-walker—who’d come to New York via stops in Erie, PA and Cleveland, Ohio. His charm and ambition would later make him indispensable to New York theater mogul Lee Shubert.

In our little corner of the world, John Kenley is best known for creating a legendary chain of summer theaters that brought big shows and Hollywood stars to small towns. The Kenley players ruled the midwest between 1957 and 1995, giving many a fledgling actor valuable experience from a master of the craft.

Back in February of 2007, Dee Perry caught up with the irrepressible impresario by phone from his home in Florida and he shared some of his career highlights, including a memorable stint with Al Jolson in the show Artists and Models in 1926.

These days Franz Welser-Most, the Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra is addressing a bit of a different crowd, by doing something that the orchestra hasn't done in decades, performing in the auditoriums of the Cleveland Municipal School District. The goal is to nurture the next generation of young classical musicians and build new audiences among those who may have heard of the Cleveland Orchestra, but have never actually attended a performance.

One of Northeast Ohio's biggest political figures recently got out of rehab, and he's looking 15 years younger. You can see for yourself, the next time you're in the vicinity of East 18th and Chester in downtown Cleveland. He's a sharp dresser…his hair glistens in the wind…and he stands THREE STORIES HIGH.

In 1994, satirical artist Billie Lawless began work on a mechanical sculpture that he called <a href="http://www.billielawless.com/description_of_pol.html " title=""The Politician --- A Toy". ">"The Politician --- A Toy". He designed this enormous political cartoon as a colorful children's pull-toy, and it has prompted quizzical looks from passers-by, ever since. But, after all those years in the rain…and the snow…and the sun, the Politician was starting to look a little shabby, so Lawless has now totally refurbished the piece.

Two time academy award winner Tom Hanks comes back to Cleveland - BACK to support the group that gave him his BIG break – the Great Lakes Theatre Company. While in town recently Hanks sat down with NPR’s Scott Simon for an episode of WVIZ/PBS ideastream’s “Backstage With,”…and here’s some of that conversation….

While Tom Hanks has played a number of unforgettable roles, one that hits close to northeast Ohio is his portrayal of NASA astronaut James Lovell, who was born in Cleveland. In the film “APOLLO 13,” Lovell and crew never made it to the moon, but throughout the Apollo Space Program six space craft did. And now plans are underway to return man to the Moon by two-thousand – twenty. And you can get a glimpse of NASA’s next generation of spacecraft at the Great Lakes Science Center.

Print making is one of the world’s oldest art forms. And thanks to a dedicated group of art lovers, Cleveland has one of the oldest print clubs in the country.
