working to promote sustainable communities. Mr. Hart is also an architect
and is past-president of the American Institute of Architects, Cleveland
Chapter."
Phil Hart's Checklist For "Smart Growth"
- Create a regional balance of city and country; nature and development.
- Learn how to live on land without spoiling it.
- Management of land use, development and infrastructure. This
means a commitment to PEOPLE AND PLACE.
- Understand the difference between GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT.
- Preservation and creation of open space.
- Maintain existing places, communities and farmland.
- Redevelop the Center City and its immediate suburbs. This means
reinvestment in the central core of the region.
- Increase density to balance and diversify the region without
creating sprawl. This includes developing alternate sources of
transportation.
- Learn how to deal with political fragmentation and income inequities.
- Continue with initiatives for creating a smart growth agenda
for Ohio. For examples, look to other cities: Portland, OR; Austin,
TX; Chattanooga, TN; Chicago, IL; Sacramento, CA; Seattle, WA;
New York, NY.
