The City Club Forum: How Has Water Sustained Us Past and Present?
Friday, July 10, 2009 at 9:25 AM
Water has been at the center of our region’s development since Moses Cleveland settled here. It could be said that it has been the primary element in our success. It has provided sustenance for agriculture and has offered a transportation corridor for raw materials that fed the region’s steel and manufacturing growth. While water has demonstrable historical significance it also continues to provide sustaining support for our regional economy. It remains at the center of commercial, agricultural and recreational concerns. Our panelists discussed the rich history and sustaining presence of water for our region. They included John J. Grabowski, who holds a joint position as the Krieger-Mueller Historian at the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Krieger-Mueller Associate Professor of Applied History at Case Western Reserve University and Patrick Conway, Co-Owner of the Great Lakes Brewing Company. Water – Our Region’s Biggest Asset was a three-part series that focused on the importance of water to our historical development, efforts to maintain its sustainability and prospects for future growth featuring our most abundant asset.
