For some people gambling is an enjoyable and harmless pastime but for others it can be a dangerous compulsion likened to that of drug or alcohol addictions. Excessive gambling can strain relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial catastrophe. As Ohioans debate whether to expand gambling in the state, we examine how it becomes an obsession for a few, who's most at risk and how it can be treated, Friday morning at 9 on the Sound of Ideas.

When I was 5 my dad let me bet him (the house) on college and professional football games using my weekly allowance. One weekend I bet on Notre Dame on Saturday and lost. Dad let me “barrow” to bet on Dallas on Sunday. Dallas lost and so did I, two weeks of allowance. I learned a lifelong lesson that you should never gamble money you cannot afford to lose. I have played penny - dime poker and had fun losing $40 Reno, NV on vacation. I was surrounded by slot machines in soldiers clubs when I was stationed in Korea. I have always viewed gambling as a game that you set a limit on how much you can “donate” to the house.
