Managers make the big bucks because they cope with higher stress levels - or so the thinking went until the Whitehall Study stood the world on its ear. Sir Michael Marmot's study of British civil servants found those on the lower rungs of the career ladder were more likely than their superiors to be stressed out and suffer physical consequences as a result. For a lot of us, there's no perfume as alluring as the smell of a new car. And it used to be that Detroit had the inside track on producing the cars most likely to seduce us. But the passing years have brought a general downshifting, not to mention downsizing, for American automakers. Plants are closing - some here in northeast Ohio. It's not that Americans are buying fewer cars; they're just buying more of them with nameplates like Toyota, Nissan and Kia.
