The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends certain groups of people get the flu vaccine -- those over 50, women who are pregnant, people with certain medical conditions -- these are all people who are likely to develop complications if they contract the flu virus. But last month, an advisory panel at the CDC extended its recommendation to one group that's not likely to develop problems -- children 6 months to 17 years. Dr. Charles Emerman, associate Chief of Staff at MetroHealth Medical Center, told ideastream®'s Eric Wellman about the theory behind the panel's recommendation.
